Biography

Since the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War Ushakov he participated in the defensive battles in the South-Western Front. In July 1941, he was gravely wounded, but in December was back to the front. In 1943, Ushakov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He went all the way up to battalion commander. In December 1944, he was gravely wounded again.

After demobilization Ushakov studied at the Department of Journalism of the School of Philology at the University of Kharkiv from which he graduated in 1952. Since 1956 (after completing the postgraduate course), he worked as a lecturer, later associate professor at the Department of History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1963, he became the Director of the Central Scientific Library of the University.

Ushakov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (1943).

Order of Lenin (1943), Order of Patriotic War and Order of Red Banner (1943), Order of Suvorov, Class III, Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Class ІІІ, ІІ, and І (2010), Medal “Golden Star” and other decorations.
