Biography

His scientific interests cover pediatrics, microbiology, etiology of degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, human genetics, etc. In mid-1950s, his interests shifted to virology, particularly epidemiological issues of exotic and isolated nations, virus infections in many remote places of the world. He discovered new mechanisms of the origin and spread of infectious diseases. The scientist carried out epidemiological studies in the USSR (Siberia and Far East). He founded of the Center for Encephalitis Studies and Treatment. He studied encephalitis and viral fever in the epidemiological zones of the Carpathians, initiated creation of such a Center in Ukraine.

Member of Ukrainian Association of Computer Medicine (Honorary Member since 2000), Society for Paediatric Research, American Pediatric Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Philosophical Society, American Academy of Neurology. Honorary Member of Columbia, Slovak and Mexican Academies of Medicine, Doctor Honoris Causa of about 30 scientific institutions of the world, and active member of about 40 scientific societies.

Awards

Laureate of Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine (1976), Mead Johnson Award of American Academy of Pediatrics (1963).
