Biography

In 1953, Epstein defended his PhD thesis “Struggle of Machine-Building Industry Workers of Ukraine for Early Completion of the First Five-Year Plan”, and in 1988 — his doctoral thesis “Working Class of Ukraine during the First Five-Year Plan”.

In 2001-2005, Epstein was a full professor of the Department of Historiography, Source Studies and Archeology of Karazin University.

Epstein is the author of about 600 scientific works, including 21 books (monographs, brochures, teaching aids).

His scientific interests are rather broad: history of the USSR, history of Ukraine, source studies, historiography, in particular history of national entrepreneurship, history of culture and foreign policy of Ukraine, history of trade unions, methodology of history teaching, area studies. Epstein is a member of the Thesis Committee at the School of History at Karazin University, a member of the Academic Board of the State Archives of Kharkiv oblast, the Head of Kharkiv Organization of the Society of Archives Workers.

Honorary Member of All-Ukrainian Association of Experts in Area Studies (1997).

Awards

Veteran of Labor (1984), Excellent Teacher of Ukraine (2002).

Orders of Great Patriotic War, Class II (1944) and Class I (1985), Order For Courage, Class II (1999), Medal “For Distinguished Labor” (1980), of Zhukov Medal (1998) and other decorations.
