Kohut is a member of the Organizing Committee of the Canada Ukraine Legislative and Intergovernmental Project within the framework of which there are held working visits, seminars and workshops, round-table discussions and meetings between Ukrainian legislators and government officials and their Canadian colleagues convening to address land privatization, and culture. He is the Head of the Kowalski Program on Studying Eastern Ukraine that supports academic research projects in eastern and southern Ukraine. He is also an economic advisor of the Canadian-Ukrainian archeological project in Baturin.
Kohut is the author of many scientific works, in particular special research on the history of Ukraine, mainly in the XVIII—ХІХ centuries. The sphere of his scientific interests also covers Russian and Ukrainian political culture, Ukrainian historiography, history of the elites, the national question, the national identity of Eastern-Slavic peoples.
