In 2001, Karl Marx University (Budapest) awards Pál Tamás the degree of Doctor of Sciences degree (Dr. habil) in macroeconomics and economic planning. In 1989-1991, he was the Director of the Institute for Public Opinion Research, in 1991-1998 — the Director of the Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 1998-2010 — the Director of the Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, currently — the Head of the Department of Knowledge, Values and Culture Research of this Institute, the Director of the Center for Social Policy of Corvinus University of Budapest. Pál Tamás gave lectures as an invited professor at the British Academy of Social and Humanitarian Sciences (London, 1983), Cambridge University (UK, 1985), Wesleyan University (Middletown, USA, 1991), Concordia University (Montreal, Canada, 1991-1992), the Scientific Center for Social Research in Berlin (1995-1996).

V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has hosted his numerous lectures as well.

Pál Tamás is an expert in social transformations of post-communist countries, author of many scientific works on the peculiarities, development, direction, and factor dependence of socio-economic, political and sociocultural changes in the post-soviet space, particularly the analysis of the events in Ukraine, the prospects of its European choice.

He is a member of the editorial boards of the following journals: Bulletin of the Institute of Sociology, Sociological Science and Social Practice, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Engineering Sciences.
