Stepanov’s scientific interests cover high-temperature plasma, controlled thermonuclear synthesis, theory of plasma in solids, radiophysocs, astrophysics and technical physics. His studies serve as the foundation of plasma electrodynamics in the magnetic field, are experimentally proven, and successfully used in the world in tokamaks, stellarators and adiabatic traps.

Stepanov is the author of more than 600 scientific works, including five monographs and ten inventions.
