Inauguration of Doctor Honoris Causa

The University Academic Board has held its meeting with the participation of the Italian astrophysicist, Professor of the University of Naples Federico II Massimo Capaccioli, the Deputy Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Ukraine, Joel Melchiori, the Scientific Director of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, Filippo Zerbi, the Director of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Karazin University Doctor Honoris Causa, Yaroslav Yatskiv, the Director of the Radio Astronomy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Viacheslav Zakharenko, the Honorary Director of the Radio Astronomy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Karazin University Doctor Honoris Causa, Leonid Lytvynenko, the Deputy Director of the Radio Astronomy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Oleksandr Konovalenko, Karazin University President, Vil Bakirov, vice-presidents, deans, directors of Research Institutes and structural subdivisions of the University, and student self-government representatives.

Massimo Capaccioli was awarded a diploma of the University Doctor Honoris Causa, a gown and a medal.

Professor Capaccioli thanked for the awarded title and said that his professional development was particularly influenced by the research activities of the physicists Lev Landau and Ilya Lifshits who worked at Karazin University (a full text of the speech, PDF, 310 Kb).

“I am certain that today’s event will give momentum to the growth and development of the interrelations with Italian partners not only in astronomy, but also in other sciences,” pointed out Mr. Bakirov.

Yaroslav Yatskiv emphasized the fact that Kharkiv has always been among the leaders of astronomical research in Ukraine and in the world. The powerful astronomy schools of Mykola Barabashov, Semen Braude and their followers are the evidence of the fact.

The parties also signed a cooperation agreement between Karazin University and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.
