Hnatchenko’s scientific interests focus on physics of magnetic phenomena, in particular low-temperature magnetism, magnetooptics and photo-induced phenomena. In ferromagnetism the scientist has discovered, visually observed, and studiedtwo-phase and double-domain structures formed in the process of phase transitions induced by the magnetic field into existence in the wide range of external magnetic fields where their upper limit reaches the field of the interchain exchange interaction.

Hnatchenko has experimentally determined important patterns in formation and evolution of magnetic domain structures of magnetic intermediate state. He is the first to have experimentally studied kinetics of the first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition induced by the magnetic field. He has determined the peculiarities of dynamics of interphase domain walls associated with the change in the wall structure when in the magnetic field.

Hnatchenko is the author of more than 110 scientific works. For many years he has been cooperating with the leading laboratories of Russia, Poland, France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the USA, and participating in a number of international scientific projects (NATO, INTAS, STCU, Volkswagen, etc.).
