Pogorelov was a full professor (1950), a corresponding member (1951), an academician (1960) of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a corresponding member (1960), an academician (1976) of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR. The scope of his scientific interests is rather wide: from abstract problems of mathematics to exclusively specific engineering tasks. The main focuses are on general geometry, geometry of elastic shells, applied works. He solved the fundamental problems of geometry and the non-linear theory of differentiated equations in partial derivatives, which has won him world acclaim. Pogorelov created the geometrical theory of stability of thin shells, and founds his own school of mathematicians.

Pogorelov is the author of more than 200 scientific publications, including 40 monographs, a lot of textbooks in geometry for universities and secondary schools.
