In his scientific interests Tolok focuses on plasma physics. He supervised the creation of the only in Ukraine and one of the largest in Europe powerful experimental base for research in controlled thermonuclear synthesis, and the foundation of a number of URAGAN stellarators. In early 1970s, Tolok initiated research in nonequilibrium plasma chemistry of high energies and created a new vacuum plasma technology of multifunctional resistance coating used on the BULAT plant and borrowed by scientists of the USA, Japan and other countries. He founded his own scientific school of physics of low temperature plasma.

Tolok is the author of 190 works, 89 of which are published in foreign editions, and a number of patents. Some of his works are about the history of physics.
